HMPV cases increase in China, what do we know?

China has reported a rise in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), sparking concerns both domestically and internationally. While doctors have urged Chinese authorities to share more information about the ongoing outbreak, the National Health Commission has yet to release official data on the current situation.
HMPV symptoms are similar to the common cold, including cough, sore throat, and a runny nose. There is currently no vaccine to prevent HMPV, but most cases are mild, with most people recovering within a week.
However, individuals at higher risk of severe symptoms include those over 65 years old and children under the age of five.
Despite the increase in cases, the Indian pharmaceutical industry, which depends on active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) manufactured in China, is not expected to be significantly impacted by the rise in HMPV infections, according to a medical commentator quoted in The Economic Times.
Given the mild nature of HMPV, experts advise that the public need not be overly concerned, though public health officials continue to closely monitor the situation in China.
